New Rules!Jockey & Racing Staff Body Protectors

Get Ready Jockeys and Stable Staff at racing yards in the UK as the BHA bring out the new rule on April 1st 2015!  The requirment for body protectors - level 1, 2 and 3 is to meet EN13158:2009.  For stable staff, The British Horseracing Authority recommends the use of level 3 vests as the highest level.  The significant change to the rule is that trainers using level 1 or 2 vests will be required to present a copy of their relevant risk assessment during the course of stable inspections.

As has always been the case, it remains the responsibility of each trainer to choose appropriate level of vest based on their risk assessment.  The BHA document correctly points out on the suitability of level 1 vests.

"This level 1 garment is designed to meet the weight restrictions that apply to licensed jockeys while racing. It is not intended for use in general horse riding as it provides significantly less protection than a level 2 garment, which is the minimum recommended for normal riding".
