Treehouse rider - David Doel cruises to victory in Ireland!

British Eventing and World Class rider David Doel travelled to Camphire in Ireland with three horses, the purpose of the trip was to qualify for selection for the 2014 Young Rider European Championships being held in Portugal at Vale Sabroso with Miss Caruso. After completing World Class training on Tuesday at Hartbury College the team went on the night ferry to Ireland. On arriving it was discovered that some parts of Ireland had not had rain for 6 weeks, and the going was very firm. The organizers at Camphire worked hard to soften the track to get some give for the horses. David’ s horse for qualification was Miss Caruso owned by the rider and Mrs. Jane James. The partnership arrived with some confidence after winning the 2* at Barbury International Horse Trials just 2 weeks previously. The World Class training paid dividends as David and Miss Caruso improved their dressage score from 37.6 at Barbury to 33.2 marks to lead the competition after the first day of the CCI 2* by 10 marks from Olivia Craddock also from Great Britain. David’s two other horses Billy Pastime, and Chap both owned by Miss Gillian Jonas were entered in the CIC 2* and CCI 2* respectively. After the first day Billy Pastime lead the dressage on 37.5, and Chap was placed 4th on 44.7. There was a strong contingent of British riders competing, with Kristina Cook, Laura Collett and Lucy Wiegersma being some of the leading senior riders present. David and Miss Caruso had a sensible round of cross country knowing that qualification was the objective of the trip, and that the lead of 10 marks after the dressage allowed for them to adjust their pace according to the ground conditions. They finished with 7.2 time penalties. They managed to maintain their lead. A clear round show jumping on Sunday meant they won the CCI 2* by 8 marks from Padraig McCarthy from Ireland ring Simon Porloe. David’s other ride Chap finished 6th. The CIC 2* had an exciting finish with David and Billy Pastime missing out on another win by .7 of a point from Cairan Glynn from Ireland riding Gee Que, but as a young horse and only competing at this level for the second time, the team were very happy with his performance.
